Now that I have your attention…

Now that I have your attention…
tell me
who put the thought
in their head?
Tell me what made them
wretched enough
to push one over.
Tell me what rose your eyebrows.
Tell me why they pulled them out
of that
deep
well.
Tell me. Tell me.
I’m stating because you stated.
Ask them if they know
what they did
when they
pushed them
into it…
before hurrying –
into the village
to gather
a rescue
team.
Ask them
why they thought
to rescue them.
Ask them
what happened
to the ones
pushed
into the pool –
deep
in
the earth.
Tell them destiny pulled them
out of the well.
Tell them all they did
was carry out
what was already
written.
Tell them it was
beyond
their control.
Tell them they will build
a hut
next to the well
… and wait.
Now that I have your attention…
I will not give it back to you.
You will see me
sitting outside the well
every time
you
collect
water,
and I will always
be lingering,
now –
that I own –
your attention.
